Packaging in B2B and B2C: Current Trends and Strategies

In the world of branding and marketing, packaging plays a key role, whether in the B2B or B2C segment. Irina Chtetsova, Brand Director at Brandson (TSN), shares her view of the current trends and strategies in this field, revealing nuances that businesses may overlook in today's challenging environment.

Packaging characteristics in the B2B and B2C segments

When packaging comes up, many people immediately picture bright boxes on store shelves. But the world of packaging is far broader and more diverse. In the B2B segment, packaging – is not just a way to protect goods, but a powerful tool of brand communication.

"In fact, packaging is not the first communication for the actual person who makes the decision to work together", – notes Irina.

The first impression is formed through various touchpoints: the website, face-to-face meetings, corporate documents, business cards and presentation materials, and so on. It is important to understand here that a B2B brand must be clearly aware of its value and present it to partners competently.

In the B2B segment, the key point – is an emphasis on reliability and safety. Picture packaging containers for freight transport.

"The key thing that matters to partners is that we highlight, first and foremost, the rational advantage – «your cargo will be safe»”

Colours and design are secondary on this market. What matters most – is confidence that the goods will arrive undamaged.

In the B2C segment, on the other hand, packaging – is first and foremost an emotion.

"B2C packaging – is first of all the emotion we build between the consumer and the brand"

Here it is important to translate the «language of the brand» into the language of the consumer, creating vivid and positive associations. Packaging should not only attract attention on the shelf, but also make people want to interact with the brand.

Current trends changing packaging

Packaging is constantly changing, and today we are seeing several key trends. The following stand out:

Sustainability is coming to the fore in both B2B and B2C. A very strong emphasis is now being placed on sustainability. Manufacturers are looking for ways to reuse packaging and to use eco-friendly materials. This is not just a nod to fashion, but a response to the demands of consumers and partners who care more and more about the environment.

Import substitution also plays a significant role in the development of the packaging industry. With the departure of many international brands from the Russian market, new niches have opened up. For example, the private label sector is developing rapidly, and retailers are seeking to increase the share of their own brands on the shelf. Overall, the resulting market vacuum creates opportunities for domestic manufacturers to develop new, innovative solutions.

Rational consumption. People are willing to pay more for a quality product. Consumers are becoming more discerning, expecting brands to take a responsible approach not only to production but also to packaging.

At the same time, the emotional component must not be forgotten. Packaging is becoming that very source of positivity that people need so much in difficult times. Everyone is tired of all the events and the negativity, and everyone simply wants brightness and positive emotions.

Employer branding: an unexpected twist

Interestingly, the topic of packaging even touches on HR. Amid instability on the labour market, companies are paying more and more attention to their image as an employer. In Russia, the problem of a «talent shortage» has become acute. So there really is demand; it is a highly relevant task right now. Employer branding is becoming an important part of a company's overall strategy, influencing how the brand is perceived not only by consumers but also by potential employees.

Communication strategy: the key to success

When talking about packaging, the topic of communication strategy cannot be ignored. It is important to build communications correctly with both partners and consumers. This works not only in the B2C direction – for our ordinary packaging that sits looking pretty on the shelf. We must always and everywhere attract the consumer's attention. A communication strategy «works» for brand awareness, for brand promotion and for building trust on the part of key, reliable contractors. In business, communication – is the core of successful and effective operations.

Artificial intelligence: a human assistant and nothing more...

In a conversation about current trends, the topic of artificial intelligence cannot be left out. AI (artificial intelligence) can certainly become a useful tool for generating ideas and speeding up the creative process. In some way it can help generate ideas, for example within an agency team, within the team of those who develop the brand and work on it. However, AI will not replace people; rather, it will complement their capabilities. A vivid comparison – is a robot vacuum cleaner, which helps optimise some processes but does not replace a person entirely. Control is still needed; most of the work has to be finished by hand.

Rebranding: when and how?

When it comes to rebranding, the first thing to do is formulate a clear goal. That is, you need to ask yourself: «what do we want in the first place, and where do we want to go?» Depending on the goal, the subsequent process is individual.

But there is one universal and important piece of advice – it is important to take into account the current needs and opportunities of the market, which may offer a chance for a qualitative leap. Large companies never miss this moment, because they always have a development plan.

Conclusion: flexibility as the main business asset in a «world of turbulence»

In a world of constant change, the key to success is flexibility and the ability to adapt. Whether in the B2B or B2C segment, packaging remains an important element of brand communication. It must not only perform its practical function, but also reflect the brand's values, meet the expectations of consumers and partners, and be sustainable and innovative.

Ultimately, successful packaging – is packaging that speaks to the consumer or partner in their own language, creating a strong emotional bond and trust in the brand. And in this art it is important not to overlook a single detail, constantly evolving and adapting to the changing realities of the market.
